Living with a slow PC It really is easy to fix. Great sodtware out there, inexpensive, to return your PC back to like when you bought it RIGHT!
Most likely the machine came with a bare minimum needed to run Vista, and Vista only. And so0ky is right too, I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to have more memory. But if you want to speed up the pc without adding any parts I’d start with shutting down programs. Changing the anti-virus is another good idea too. What can’t be turned off can sometimes be changed to a more resource friendly program.
And last of all is checking for malware, cleaning the drive, cleaning the registry and defragging the drive. Since it was running slow to begin with this isn’t the main problem. But, those are things that should be done to keep a pc running as fast as it possibly can. I normally do all of those weekly but I add and remove programs and files more than most people. Regular maintenance is important to keep your pc running at it’s best.
Lately my computer has become very slow. I’ve checked with several programs including Search & Destroy for any viruses but it’s clean. I’ve googled a lot and found out that just with time and installing and uninstalling programs can have this affect on my computer.
trying to figure out why my computer is so slow.. i’ve tried the cleaners, anti-spywares, defrags, etc etc etc.. i’m thinking of reformatting, but i’m not too sure how, so i’d rather find the problem and fix it!
another little problem I’m having is when i start my computer, and the taskbar is loading, a little thing appears and says “Windows did not start this device driver because it may cause your computer to become unstable.” It’s taking about my Cd burner.. Sony CD-RW CRX230ED.. what do I do?
you have ALOT of load for 144MB of ram. While it will be a good idea to clear out most of these from the start menu and the run menu in the registry, the best suggestion I can give is to get more Ram.
Now that this is out of the way, I recommend you go to the startup folder via |start| -> |Programs| -> |Startup| and delete most, if not all of the shortcuts that are there.
Second, and I have to warn against messing around with the registry as you can permanently damage the installation, you can try removing some programs from the run folder in the registry. To do this go to: |Start| -> |Run| and type in “regedit”, then click ok. In the registry, you need to go to 2 different run folders and remove most unneeded programs from these.
Run 1.: hkey_current_user -> software -> microsoft -> windows -> current version -> run
Its safe to clean the entries in this folder. Default and ctfmon.exe can stay.
Run 2.: hkey_local_machine-> software -> microsoft -> windows -> current version -> run
It is also safe to remove all entries on this folder, except for default. However, keep in mind that this will prevent alot of program files to load when you first start the computer, which translates to a little longer wait when you do start those programs. Just as an example, if Microsoft Office quickstart was part of the run folder or the startup folder, when you remove it and restart the computer, and you try to open an office program, it will take a few seconds longer to start the program as opposed to its normal start up time if those files were still there.
That should really clean out your computer rather nicely. Another place you can look at is Services: Within |Control Panel| open up |Administrative Tools| and double click |Services|. Look at all the programs that have “Automatic” next to their start up type, and make sure that their name does not have gibberish like “nbhldit” as its name, and no description, because that ussually means, its a trojan infection, or some other type of malignant program. Do not remove anything from services unless you are possitive you do not want it to start up when your computer starts. Most programs there are needed
